Fenix 5-4

About a year ago, a friend and I discovered a new eatery in Uptown Whittier, Fenix 5-4. We came upon it by googling “healthy restaurants” in our area. Ever since, I have gone there when I want a good, healthful American lunch. “We believe that healthy food should taste good. We believe healthy eating is a choice we must make – more raw, more fresh, less refined sugars, less pesticides, and more hormone free.” Sounds promising, no? Everything there is made fresh.  Their meat is nitrate free…they even roast their own turkeys!

I decided to document my most recent visit to Fenix 5-4.  I took my mom there and upon the first spoonful/bite, she became an instant fan.

She ordered the Vegetarian chili and Natural Turkey Guacamole Sandwich.  The Veg Chili is loaded with tender vegetables and has an amazing blend of spices that taste better than normal, meaty chili.  Next time I go there, I’m definitely going to get some of that.

I ordered Fideo soup and the Cali Cheesesteak Sandwich.  The soup is simple and savory: chicken broth infused with tomato, onion, garlic and cilantro.  The Cali Cheesesteak is one of my favorite sandwiches there.  Since the meat isn’t loaded with salt and fried, it doesn’t have the stereotypical texture of a Philly Cheesesteak.  It tastes more like roast beef.  It contains Nitrate Free All Natural Beef, roasted peppers, onions, mushrooms, melted provolone.  All together, it is an incredible sandwich that I can’t stop ordering.

They also offer vegetarian sandwiches made with fake meat.  In general, I don’t enjoy fake meat but it may be up your alley if you normally consume it.    I have yet to try the beverages but if their food is any indication of their drinks, they must be good!

Fenix 5-4 is a shield from the storm of chain restaurants and fast food.  It is an eatery that actually makes food instead of dispensing it (ahem, Subway). I hope you get a chance to try it soon!!
